Dyena, manufacturers of vessel and crew monitoring systems, has unveilled a new suite of integrated technologies, available as standalone products or a complete package.
The latest products, released under the banner of Dyena OFFSHORE, are aimed at both large professional maritime organisations and smaller operators who recognise the benefits of utilising vessel data monitoring to improve crew safety.
Based in Southampton, and recently moved to a new headquarters in Ocean Village, Dyena have been designing and producing marine monitoring systems since 2012, carving their own niche in the industry and quietly earning the respect of some major industry customers.
The OFFSHORE system starts with the Vessel Monitoring Unit(VMU), a compact unit for recording crew and vessel performance data to internal memory for autonomous uploading to a remote server. Mounted in a solid location on the vessel, the VMU provides the basis for monitoring the shocks and impacts received by the boat structure and crew.
Acceleration data is sampled and filtered in accordance with the ISO standards on whole body vibration with the standard package recording peaks every second, with options to record data at 25hz or 100hz. The two year memory capacity allows data from any event to be captured and analysed.
Compact remote sensors can be added to different locations around the vessel to measure accelerations in equipment or monitor the impacts on the crew. For example, by comparing the data from the VMU and remote sensors on the seats, operators can demonstrate the effectiveness of shock mitigating seats in protecting passengers.
All data is synchronised to the remote cloud server for review from anywhere in the world by logging into Dyena’s online portal. From here the user can select any vessel from their fleet and see data from a complete voyage or zoom in to see high resolution data. The course is displayed on the map, with the performance and motion data on the graphs below. Data from multiple days and vessels can be overlaid for comparison.
Dyena also provide credit card size wireless tracking tags to automatically record the crew manifest for every journey of the vessel, with the VMU automatically logging them on and off the boat. When coupled with Dyena’s LiveTRAX fisheries vessel monitoring system, these tags provide a Man Overboard alert.
Acceleration data is sampled at 1000hz and filtered in accordance with the ISO standards on whole body vibration with the standard package recording peaks every second. For advanced users this can be upgraded to record data at 25hz or 100hz. With over 2 years memory capacity, this allows data from any event to be captured and analysed.
Dyena’s systems are always designed for the end user. Founder of company, James Glover has an envious background in motorsport and high speed vessel design, with plenty of experience using data logging systems over 20 years. “Those systems require a trained engineer to setup and maintain them. This is acceptable for a race team or scientific organisation, but most maritime companies don’t have the spare resource to regularly download data and calibrate sensors. In the past, I would be given data without the time set correctly, or with a channel configured incorrectly and this made analysing old data more difficult.”
He added: “Dyena systems have always been designed as a fit-and-forget for maritime users who need reliable data over a long period of time. Our units are simple to install, self calibrating, and with robust programming to ensure they continue operating in all conditions. Initially we were not targeting the scientific community, however we are now on the approved supplier list for naval trials. Our technology has increased such that we now provide reliable high resolution data over a long period and with our autonomous uploads scientists can access data from vessels during extended overseas tests.”
The ease of installation and streamlined user interface are evidence of the Dyena design ethos. “We believe in reducing user interaction where possible. Everyone is already busy, and new legislation just adds to the workload. We aim to provide a simple oversight of operations, highlighting anything that need to be looked at in more detail.”
Dyena provides a smartphone app for use in naval trials or as part of an organisations HSEQ solution replacing paper pain assessment charts. The user can quickly and confidentially provide a daily record of their physical wellbeing allowing preventative action to be taken before an injury escalates. The data is stored in a secure server and only accessible by the company’s nominated reviewer. The app includes useful functions to support remote workers such as incident reporting, hours tracking and parts ordering. OFFSHORE is a culmination of experience gained supplying VMS solutions for offshore projects including the Rampion and Galloper Windfarms. Dyena supplies the hardware for the James Fisher Offshore Wind Management System(OWMS) using satellite and mobile communications to provide live position data for vessels and personnel building and maintaining turbines in the North Sea.
Dyena has locations along the south coast concentrating on different aspects of their products. All hardware is designed and manufactured in-house, a dedicated team maintain the online portal and the servers are hosted within Amazons London centre for maximum security. Away from their maritime operations, they also provide engineering consultancy and invest in other ventures. Recently James Glover and Greg Simmons, Head of Operations, spent two years working for an automotive company designing and producing an engine utilising new technology developed for the US military to reduce fuel costs in combat zones. On a completely different direction, Dyena has a designer in New York launching a smart interior design product range.
Continuing their release of new products; Dyena has launched its new fisheries VMS system as a response to the industry requirement for low cost vessel monitoring systems deploying across entire fleets of small fishing vessels. LiveTRAX operates autonomously, sending live location reports to the authorities VMS Operation Centre. With most vessels remaining in coastal waters, information is transmitted over the mobile GSM network to reduce operating costs. The safety of single-handed vessel operators is increased using the wireless tracking cards. If they fall overboard the system alerts the VMS hub immediately with the vessels position, course and speed to aid in safe retrieval.
